Matthieu is involved in research and development advances in the field of artificial intelligence at Homiwoo. He supervises his teammates' research and works on technical subjects himself, drawing on the expertise he has acquired through his studies and professional experience. A senior researcher since June 2022, he talks to us about his day-to-day work at the company, which he also represents at conferences where he presents his work.

What are your missions at Homiwoo and what was your background before joining the teams?

After a Master's and a PhD in Computer Science at the Université Joseph-Fourier in Grenoble, as well as certification in Data Science from the University of Passau, I am now a senior R&D researcher in machine learning and deep learning at Homiwoo.

As soon as I arrived, I contributed my methodological expertise by supervising a doctoral thesis and helping to finalise it with the help of academic supervisors from the École Polytechnique. On a day-to-day basis, this experience enables me to support the other members of the team with writing their articles, as well as identifying relevant conferences and journals at which they can present their research.

On a more technical level, I contribute my experience in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and image processing. However, my work is always a little upstream, on subjects that are not yet directly exploitable in production, but which open up new perspectives for the future.

What really motivates me is the opportunity to publish the results of our research and present them at conferences, which gives us the chance to exchange ideas with the scientific community and contribute to advances in these different fields.

What is a typical day like at Homiwoo?

Our morning ritual begins with a team meeting. This is a key moment when everyone shares their progress as well as any difficulties they may have encountered. It's an opportunity to provide group support to the members of the team.

Throughout the remainder of our days, we have a wide range of activities, depending on the different development and optimisation phases we are working on. For example, when a technical challenge arises in the development of one of our algorithms, we draw on existing scientific literature. The aim is to understand whether other researchers have already encountered a similar problem and to analyse their approaches to solving it. These references guide us and let us refine our own iterations as we move forward.

Can you tell us about an outstanding project to which you have contributed?

The International Conference on Computer Vision, which is generally held every two years, made a particularly strong impression on me at its 2023 edition in Paris. We took part in two different ways.

Firstly, in partnership with a research laboratory, the doctoral student I supervise wrote a paper that was presented to a committee of experts and scientists from the conference. Secondly, we had the honour of being chosen to give a demonstration, a key moment in the conference. This interactive presentation put us right at the heart of the event. We were therefore able to benefit from special attention from the scientific community.

The feedback from participants was particularly encouraging and rewarding, as they showed a keen interest in the quality and scope of our research.

What do you like best about your working environment?

Apart from the recognition we receive, particularly at conferences, the atmosphere at Homiwoo is one of trust, which gives us great freedom of action. This allows us to explore and develop the subjects that we are passionate about.

What particularly motivates me is the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge technological issues that are redefining the way we use technology and the way we live our lives.

What advice would you give to potential candidates wishing to join Homiwoo?

Working at Homiwoo means having the opportunity to work on cutting-edge and topical subjects such as generative artificial intelligence. I don't think many companies allow their employees to work on these subjects in this way. These areas are new, innovative and fascinating, and there aren't yet any ready-made solutions for dealing with them.

Joining Homiwoo also means joining a company with a human dimension where everyone finds their place. Because the company trusts us, it entrusts us with crucial technological issues!
